I LOVED Big Trouble in Little China as a kid growing up in 1986. It truly was a cult classic with the brilliant marriage of comedy, sci-fi and martial arts all wrapped into one amazing American Film! The only problem is that trying to watch it now when I’m older it gets very tough to enjoy it as much as I did as a kid having been so spoiled with vastly improved special effects. The story is still great to follow along with but ultimately the film is truly outdated. In 1986 the biggest action star was Kurt Russell…..today the biggest action star is no doubt The Rock!

Then came word of a remake and the internet world was buzzing last week after rumors were flying that Dwayne Johnson could be in talks to star in Fox’s remake of Big Trouble in Little China. Even as the mixed reactions were posted fast and furiously. Right away as many fans of the original movie were very unhappy with all of the news, while other rejoiced at a more modern filming of the John Carpenter’s 1986 cult classic. The Rock who will fill the role Kurt Russell played in the earlier 80’s classic sci-fi/kung-fu film had this to say to officially announce his involvement with the film.

“I loved reading the reactions from the fans, that they were so polarized – I’m the same way. My response is: know that I come to the project with nothing but love and respect for the original, which is why we want to bring on John Carpenter.” – Dwayne told EW

Ashley Miller and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class) are attached to write the Big Trouble in Little China script, Johnson who desperately wants Carpenter – who directed the original comedy classic to have involvement in this remake as well.

“I loved the original when I was younger and I loved the main character – all the characters, It felt like if we surrounded ourselves with the right group of people, the right writers who loved the movie too and wanted to honor it, bring on John Carpenter in some capacity … If we did that, then we have a shot at hopefully making something good.” – said Johnson,

Mr. Carpenter was asked on Social Media just days after the first rumors were spreading told fans what he knew of his prized project “I only know what I read in the papers” and also added “20th Centry Fox owns the rights” to BTILC and that as he put it “I’m doing fine”

While this is still a fluid motion production and anything can happen with the star power of The Rock behind it all, you never know what he could pull out the bag of celebrity tricks. It is not too far-fetched to think that “Ol’ Jack Burton” himself Mr. Kurt Russell couldn’t make an appearance with Carpenter helping with story as well.

“Let’s see what feels good, what we can come up with and then go from there, And as we write it, if the whole thing starts to stink up, then we thank everybody for their efforts and accept this just couldn’t make it.” – Added the Rock
