“Pants Optional” is PopCultHQ’s Zoom video interview feature where we connect with individuals within the comic book community. It’s a way to see/hear what creators have been doing during the pandemic, projects which may be in motion, and noteworthy events and happenings taking place in lieu of conventions, appearances, and the weekly NCBD grind.
For Episode XLVII, I spoke with Rylend Grant. The Hollywood screenwriter, author, and Ringo Award-winning comic book writer (ABERRANT, BANJAX, THE JUMP, THE PEACEKEEPERS, SUICIDE JOCKEYS) and frequent guest at PopCultHQ (it’s strictly platonic, I swear) is back to Kickstarter with his latest project – FA SHENG: Origins – the newest title at the home of Wuxia martial arts/fantasy, Immortal Studios. Despite Grant’s many accolades and credits to his name, it is his being an ordained Soto Zen Buddhist monk that gets to shine in this new miniseries.
Fa Sheng: Origins is an all-new wuxia comic created by Peter Shiao, written by Rylend Grant, and illustrated by artist Dexter Wee, about the humble beginnings of a great Shaolin Master. It is the third series (and fourth Kickstarter campaign) from Immortal Studios, a new comic-first content studio. The Immortal Storyverse began with The Adept, and continued with Chronicles of the Immortal Swordsmen, both available as add-ons to the current campaign!
