PopCultHQ had the privilege in attending & covering Comic-Con International‘s Comic-Con Special Edition, a three-day event on Thanksgiving weekend (November 26-28). The pared down convention was much more comic-centric than in years’ past due to the show running in the fall rather than the summertime event for which it’s known. Comic-Con International also reduced the number of tickets being sold, as well as implemented COVID precautions to protect those in attendance.
At Comic-Con Special Edition, I spoke with David Avallone. Lover of histories and mysteries (not sure why I chose those words), the writer extraordinaire and podcaster has been keeping busy.
If you’re familiar with any of the major properties at Dynamite Entertainment, then you’ve likely seen David’s work. Characters such as Doc Savage, The Shadow, Vampirella, Bettie Page, and Elvira have all had their voice given the Avallone treatment. The writer has always tackled these properties with such care and love; it’s easy to do when you’re such a fan of the characters yourself. Being such an architect for so many Dynamite titles and their continued popularity, David is still having fun exploring more about these characters.
Avallone is also working alongside Kevin Eastman on some creator-owned projects. The duo’s DRAWING BLOOD has now had two successfully-funded Kickstarter campaigns, allowing for volumes one and two of the series and featuring artists Ben Bishop & Troy Little. Spinning out of DRAWING BLOOD is another Eastman/Avallone creation THE RADICALLY REARRANGED RONIN RAGDOLLS. For more on either of these titles, head over to Kevin Eastman Studios website and snag some for yourself!
While at Comic-Con Special Edition, we chatted about his current series ELVIRA MEETS VINCENT PRICE, the upcoming Kickstarter for KOLCHAK: THE NIGHT STALKER, the latest on DRAWING BLOOD Vol. 2, and the future for the RADICALLY REARRANGED RONIN RAGDOLLS!
A special thanks to David Avallone for taking the time to speak with me and PopCultHQ at Comic-Con Special Edition. Be sure to follow the sharpest dresser on the convention scene (as long as Joe Illidge isn’t in attendance) to stay up on all his latest projects.
