Dr. Hal Raglan, portrayed by Oliver Reed, introduces us to his unconventional therapy methods at the Somafree Institute of Psychoplasmics. Raglan believes in unleashing repressed emotions through physical manifestations.

HIs patient Nola Carveth, played by Samantha Eggar, is the estranged wife of Frank Carveth (Art Hindle). Nola is in the throes of a custody battle for their daughter, Candice (Cindy Hinds). This tumultuous family drama takes a macabre turn as Nola’s therapy sessions manifest in a most peculiar way. Dr. Raglan’s treatments result in the birth of grotesque, childlike creatures known as “the brood.” The dwarflike children are the accidental product of Nola’s rage. These bizarre creatures respond and act on the targets of her rage, with Nola completely unaware of their actions. 

The brood, resembling pint-sized humanoid monstrosities, are repulsive and fascinating. Cronenberg’s practical effects work is a testament to the ingenuity of 1970s horror cinema. Each creature is a nightmarish concoction of deformity, from their embryonic birth sacs to their malicious intent. The film immerses viewers in a world where horror is more than psychological it’s also tangible and chilling.

Cold and Isolated

As the brood wreak havoc, the Carveth family becomes embroiled in a nightmarish battle, with each other and the monstrous offspring. The chilly Canadian landscape, enhances the sense of isolation and dread. The bleakness of the environment mirrors the emotional coldness within the Carveth household.

“The Brood” is a slow-burning nightmare, that allows tension to build steadily before unleashing its surreal horrors. Cronenberg’s direction is deliberate and unnerving, creating an atmosphere that lingers long after the credits roll. The haunting score, composed by Howard Shore, adds another layer to the film’s sense of disquiet that underscores each chilling moment with an eeriness.

The film’s climax is a tour de force of psychological horror, as the true nature of Nola’s ‘psychoplasmic experiments ‘children’ is revealed.
