If you are an avid sci-fi fan, you’ve probably been a little bummed that there hasn’t been a really good TV series in a while. Well, thanks to a new show on the Syfy channel, you don’t have to worry about that anymore. Here’s why you should drop whatever you are doing to go watch The Expanse.
It Comes From Excellent Books
The Expanse is based on a series of novels by the writing team of Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck who have been widely acclaimed. Plus, both authors are very involved with the show. This means that in addition to great writing, the show will stay true to the source material, which is fantastic news for fans of the books.
The Plot Is Intriguing
The Expanse takes familiar themes but puts them in interesting new places. The story focuses on the heightening tension between Mars and the planetoid Ceres in the Belt. Apparently the rich folks on Mars are getting water from the Belt’s ice miners, but those miners are poor and living in horrible conditions. Now, it could be up to Earth to get involved in the conflict.
It’s Been Called The Next Battlestar Galactica
That may be sacrilegious to a lot of people, but it could be true. In fact, here’s what TV critic Andrew Liptak had to say in Wired: “From the first couple episodes I have to say I like it more than Battlestar Galactica. I think the story is going to be a lot stronger and a lot more focused.” Strong words, certainly, but The Expanse might just have the chops to live up to them.

While there may not be any dragons or zombies, The Expanse does resemble Game of Thrones in other ways, especially when it comes to political intrigue. There are many different people from all over the solar system jockeying for power with their own plans and schemes.
It Contains Working-Class Folks We All Can Relate To
Sure, it is nice to see the well-dressed and -coiffed engineers on a show like Star Trek, but making a spaceship run is a dirty job, and The Expanse does not shy away from that. The people working on the ships in this show are not astronauts. They are basically space mechanics, which is refreshing to see.
The Spaceships Are Pretty Spectacular
Speaking of spaceships, The Expanse won’t let viewers down in that department. “Fans will be treated to plenty of ship porn,” says the Fandom Wikia. And not only do the exteriors look amazing, but the insides are just as impressive. Plus, because the show wants everything to look as real as possible, green screens are used very sparingly.
