Earlier today, DC Entertainment and Frank Miller announced the long-anticipated final installment of Miller’s Dark Knight trilogy. The Dark Knight III: The Master Race will be an 8-issue miniseries written by Miller and eisner Award-winner Brian Azzarello (Wonder Woman, 100 Bullets). Unlike the previous two stories, The Dark Knight Returns and The Dark Knight Strikes Again, Frank Miller will not be illustrating the graphic novel. Artists for this new installment have yet to be confirmed.
1986’s The Dark Knight Returns is recognized as one of the great Batman stories made to date. The story is what inspired the upcoming Zack Snyder film Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice film. Miller penned the follow-up, The Dark Knight Strikes Again, in 2001, some 15 years after the first story. Now, 14 years later, we close out the trilogy of the caped crusader as seen through the eyes of this amazing writer.
In a press release, Frank Miller had the following to say, “Batman remains my favorite comic book hero and a sequel to Dark Knight is going to be daunting, but we’ll do our best.” His co-writer, Brian Azzarello, also chimed in, “It’s been an amazing experience collaborating with Frank these past six months. I think we have an epic story that these characters truly deserve.” Co-publishers for DC Entertainment, Dan DiDio and Jim Lee, spoke on Miller’s return to the company, “We are thrilled to have Frank back home at DC writing Batman. The story he and Brian have crafted is an astounding and triumphant conclusion to this seminal body of work which influenced and shaped generations of readers and creators alike.”
The Dark Knight III: The Master Race will be released this fall and published twice a month.
