Disney’s Live-Action ‘Mulan’ Adds New Actors

Mulan

Disney is slowly rounding out the cast for its live-action Mulan film. Last November, it was announced that Chinese actress Liu Yifei (also known as Crystal Liu) would have the starring role. This week, there have been three new additions to the cast. We now know that Donnie Yen, Gong Li, Jet Li, and Xana Tang will be starring in the remake of the Chinese tale as well.

Yen, who also had a main role in Disney’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, will have the role of Commander Tung, Mulan’s mentor.

Martial artist and actor Jet Li is in final talks to play the emperor of China. It is this character’s orders of the mobilization of troops, through the conscription of one male from each household, that spurs Mulan to disguise herself as a male to spare her elderly father.

Actress Gong Li has been cast as the film’s villain. In a change from the 1998 animated film, her character is described as being a “powerful witch.”

Chinese-Vietnamese actress Xana Tang will play the role of Mulan’s sister, and original character for the live-action film.

With a release date of March 27, 2020, Mulan will begin shooting this August.
