With the success of streaming services such as Netflix and Hulu, companies like CBS and the BBC are creating their own streaming services to get a bit of the action, and it looks now like Disney is jumping on the bandwagon too.
Less than a year after Disney allowed Netflix exclusive streaming rights for its new movies, the company announced today that it will create its own streaming service once the current deal expires in 2019.
As of last September, Netflix was the only place you could stream new Disney, Pixar, Marvel, and Star Wars films. This means that any Disney movies that come out in 2019, including Frozen 2 and Toy Story 4, will not appear on Netflix, but go straight to the new streaming service. As of right now this is only about new Disney and Pixar movies, meaning that Netflix’s Marvel shows The Defenders, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, Iron Fist, and Daredevil will not be affected, and Netflix will continue to produce these shows after 2019.
Disney CEO Bob Iger stated that the fate of Marvel and Star Wars films in regards to this new service has not yet been decided.
In a press release posted on the Walt Disney website, the company stated that the service will also be the exclusive streaming home for original content, including movies and television shows.
“The new Disney-branded service will become the exclusive home in the U.S. for subscription-video-on-demand viewing of the newest live action and animated movies from Disney and Pixar, beginning with the 2019 theatrical slate, which includes Toy Story 4, the sequel to Frozen, and The Lion King from Disney live-action, along with other highly anticipated movies. Disney will also make a significant investment in an annual slate of original movies, TV shows, short-form content and other Disney-branded exclusives for the service. Additionally, the service will feature a vast collection of library content, including Disney and Pixar movies and Disney Channel, Disney Junior and Disney XD television programming.”
