Can you believe it has been 30 years already?! This year marks the 30th anniversary of Dark Horse Comics. In honor of this level of achievement and longevity, the publisher announced that on June 4th, they will be officially marking that day as Dark Horse Day.

In celebration, participating retailers will be provided promotional materials, discounts, and incentives including “promo packages.” These packages each consist of a Dark Horse patch, five double-sided posters, five postcards, five window clings, and five Dark Horse Day Sampler comics featuring some of the most notable properties Dark Horse has published over the years. A 40-page Dark Horse Day sampler, included in all packages, will feature Aliens vs. Predator: Blood Time (1994), by Randy Stradley and Phill Norwood, Sin City: Daddy’s Little Girl (1996), by Frank Miller, and The Umbrella Academy: Anywhere but Here (2008), by Gerard Way and Gabriel Bá! Plus: a new Buffy the Vampire Slayer tale by Christos Gage!

By the looks of it, it wouldn’t take much for your LCS to be considered a participating retailer.  To qualify, retailers purchase key backlist titles from a selection of 40 titles. There are tiers to qualify for bigger discounts and more promo items. But heck, even if your store isn’t on board, they could still purchase a shrink-wrapped package of 25 copies of the Dark Horse Day Sampler for only 10!

Dark Horse’s president and publisher, Mike Richardson, had this to say in a press release:

Just over thirty years ago, I gathered a group of would-be collaborators in the restaurant I owned and told them I was going to start a comics company. I’m not sure whether their smiles were a result of excitement over the possibilities or amusement at the thought of it, but here we are all these years later making comic books.

It’s been an amazing journey and we’ve witnessed extraordinary changes both in the comics market and in our pop culture over three decades. We’re excited to still be spending our lives in the career we love, and we hope that you all will help us celebrate thirty years of comics.
