PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
XERXES: THE FALL OF THE HOUSE OF DARIUS
AND THE RISE OF ALEXANDER #1

Writing:

XERXES #1Frank Miller is returning to a universe all too familiar to him. Come along and revel in the wonder and glory of ancient Greece, and another tale from the world of 300. This time, Frank takes fans and loyal readers back in time ten years prior to Thermopylae. Witness his skilled pen chronicle the rise of Alexander the Great, one of Greece’s greatest leaders, and the downfall of one of Persia’s mightiest kings.

Art:

Every time, Frank just keeps nailing it with his art. This first issue is certainly no exception. The detailing, the sleek linework. He is a man who long ago mastered the particular brand of comic book art that makes the work he does superb. Tied into the fact that Frank is doing both the story and art for the new series makes the overall an enticing package.

Alex’s colors really help add extra energy to Frank’s artwork. There is a very bright energy to the choices for coloring, even when the art and moment in the script are full of the carnage and glory of armed combat. Whatever may come with the following issues, things can only keep on being great for Alex’s work as colorist.

Sharpen your weapons and gird yourselves for war. It is time to return to ancient Greece, land of warriors and heroes, kings and gods. Another tale unfolds within, of an epic struggle ten years before Leonidas and his Spartans make their stand at Thermopylae.
