JIMMY’S BASTARDS #5

Writing:

Things have gotten even more madcap for Jimmy Regent. Garth Ennis has put Britain’s number one spy into a conflict of epic proportions, one that has a surprising and disturbing twist for Jimmy. Garth’s writing brings all the classic spy elements into play; guns, gore and danger for Jimmy and Nancy. The book is another example of Garth’s high-caliber writing exhibited over the years.

Art:

Russ Braun’s art is always fantastic. His working with Garth means that this issue, like the others, is chock full of violent action and intense imagery. The linework on his characters is sleek and glorious. Everyone from Jimmy and Nancy to background figures/henchmen has shape and form and substance. Russ’s art is always a delight to look at, he is truly one of the greats.

John’s colors for issue #5 are dead-on. The choices for skin tones, objects like planes, guns, etc. all have meticulous attention and detail. There seems to be a definite and special attention paid to colors for moments of extreme violence and action. It wouldn’t be a spy comic without guns blazing and excessive violence and that calls for the right colors, courtesy of John Kalisz.

For lettering, once more Rob Steen wins the day. Even though there is no alterations to the letters themselves (denoting any number of London accents), everybody has a voice. Jimmy, Nancy, Junior, Sir X, even henchmen and sundry background figures. With Jimmy especially, readers will hear that dignified London upper crust tone, milked in with the cheeky nature that befits Jimmy’s personality. Full marks to Rob for fine work again.

PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:

Jimmy and Nancy have themselves in hot water. There’s danger galore as the gender fluid wreaks havoc and Jimmy confronts Junior. It’s another slam-bang fantastic chapter from Garth Ennis and Russ Braun. For everyone who has not read the series yet and loves spy adventures, this is for you.
