[Comic Book Review] Image Comics' MAGE: THE HERO DENIED #11

Mage: The Hero Denied #11

Writing:

Matt’s writing takes a very interesting turn here. Readers see how Kevin and family are preparing for the coming conflict. There’s some whimsical moments between Magda and Hugo while they make plans to escape, especially a moment that is pure literary homage gold. In spite of the fact that things are coming to the close for this last chapter of Mage, Matt’s made every issue a sheer delight to read.

Art:

Reflecting off the winning scripts is the equally-winning artwork from Matt. Here, readers get some lovely nature scenes with Kevin and Miranda, especially when they happen upon a particular kingdom within the wooded area. Meanwhile, for Magda, Hugo, and the Umbra Sprite, the artwork brings new sights to the table. For the Sprite, readers will see how evil she truly is. With Magda and Hugo, the bond of mother and son, plus that literary homage mentioned above.

Magic is abounding here in issue #11. That mean’s Brennan gets to color some very marvelous and engaging art. Utilizing choices that reflect the nature of the magic at play; whether it’s the magic of the woods encountered by Kevin, the dark magic of Umbra Sprite, or the delightful spells and enchantments used by Magda. All these magics have color schemes that signify not only their place in the story, but their meaning and purpose on a whole. And Brennan brings them to life beautifully.

Lots of great dialogue from all parties here. Dave’s lettering remains at its peak standard of excellence. With some variations throughout as minor changes are introduced (magic, some new surprises both storywise and artwise). Those changes mean Dave plays around with different lettering styles, which are very awesome and enjoyable. A big kudos to Dave for all his work these past 10 issues.

PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:

There’s magic in the air this issue. And no, not candlelight romance and soothing music. No, this is the magic of threads drawing tight and the end being prepared. What will follow is a battle unlike any other. Kevin, Magda, and Umbra Sprite all are gearing up for the end. And whatever that end may be, it will be as astounding as the other Mage tales.
