PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
MARVEL VAULT OF HEROES: Thor Vol. 1 TPB
Thor is the mightiest of heroes, and Prince of Asgard. Within this tome are some valiant stories of the God of Thunder, both on his own and with other characters. With writing and artwork from a variety of creative teams, it is a cornucopia of fun, done in as fantastic a way as Marvel can.
Writing: The writing for this collection is enjoyable, though some of the stories within feel not as much Thor like as others do. An example would be the third one, written by Paul Tobin, barely features Thor at all. Nevertheless, all the persons who wrote stories featured in the book did a stand-up job.
Art: Artists of every type are featured in the book. And while the styles vary depending on the script that it is paired with, all of them are visual feasts for the eyes. Bold lines, rich detail on everything from Thor’s costumes to buildings and various exotic locales. A fine and fantastic assortment of artistic renderings.
Colors: Colorists have a job that is both fun and challenging. Finding the right colors, hues and shades that go alongside the artwork and stories. Yet each colorist did not drop the ball, not once. Clothes, hair, skin, buildings, scenery, monsters and more. All of them rendered in beautiful colors.
Letters: Dave Sharpe is a dedicated letterer and this entire trade is a great example of his work. A great challenge with lettering any Thor comic is rendering not only the speech of Thor, but all Asgardian’s in a fine, Shakespeare style script. Yet Dave went to work each time with the same dedication that is put forth by all of those who letter comics.
A collection of varied and enjoyable Thor comics, all suitable for future generations of young True Believers. This reviewer found the book to be a fun read, though two of the stories felt more like ones where Thor was a side-character instead of the main attraction. Nevertheless, a valiant work from IDW and one that is sure to be a delight for years to come.
