PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
HELLBOY: KRAMPUSNACHT

Writing:

Mike Mignola has always delivered when it comes to Hellboy stories, and this frightfest, Christmas one-shot is no exception. Hellboy has been around the world and beyond. He has seen things that would frighten anyone else. And he has bested the worst monsters that would seek to overrun humanity. So what does Mike have him face this Christmas? None other then the very opposite of Santa Claus himself. This story is pure Hellboy to the core and chock full of Mike’s usual amazing writing.

Art:

Adam Hughes is a legend in comics. His art style is a standout and wonderfully unique example of the form. Working together with Mike on this wild and intense Hellboy piece is utterly fabulous. There isn’t a single panel that doesn’t draw the reader’s eye ahead more to see what happens next. It’s wall-to-wall violence and action, the sort of thing that comes with any Hellboy story and Adam’s work gives it that extra kick.

Clem’s lettering for this Christmas fright story is excellent. While there isn’t any sort of dramatic alteration to the lettering for any of the characters, there is power. Hellboy’s lettering especially because of who he is. When reading through this book and seeing Clem’s work, I heard every bit of dialogue in my head as spoken by Ron Perlman. And that is all thanks to Clem.

PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:

Christmas is nearly here and that means comics companies are gearing up for the holiday. Mike Mignola, Adam Hughes and Clem Robins came together with Dark Horse to give the gift of a Hellboy Christmas story. And while it may not have any of the holly jolly goodness of any typical Christmas ta;e, this is one story that is a great buy for any Hellboy fan. It’s gritty and has edge, not to mention that usual Hellboy punch of excitement.

PopCultHQ’s Rating:

5 Out of 5 Stars
