4 KIDS WALK INTO A BANK is the darkly comedic story of four burgeoning child criminals and their elaborate plans. When a group of bumbling criminals show up in her father’s life looking to pull one last job, young Paige has two choices — let her father get caught up in their criminal hijinks or enlist her three best friends to do the job first. Paige picks the bad one.

180ish pages of full color comic-booking about friendship, family, growing up, and grand larceny from rising star writer Matthew Rosenberg (WE CAN NEVER GO HOME, KINGPIN, SECRET WARRIORS) and equally rising star artist Tyler Boss (LAZARUS, CALEXIT, Vice Magazine). This volume collects the complete series that Kieron Gillen (THE WICKED + THE DIVINE, DARTH VADER) described as “Imagine Tarantino does Goonies. And excellent.” And Brian K. Vaughan (SAGA, Y THE LAST MAN) said was “Exploding with ambition and love of the medium!”

PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
4 Kids Walk Into A Bank TPB

Writing:

Matthew Rosenberg’s script for this trade is hilarious and action-packed. It has all the charm of an after-school special, mashed up with the action and intensity of a heist movie. Part of what breaks up the plot is hilarious interludes where the kids are role-playing using tabletop RPG figurines and toys. Those sections are like a cartoon playing before a movie at the theater. All together, his story is a fun and fast-paced one, loaded with laughs and action for the readers.

Art:

Tyler Boss’ art is both fun and easy on the eyes. The world of the trade is a normal one, it’s the kind of world where normal things happen. Then there’s the kids, who are anything but normal, they are rather adventurous. So Tyler’s art takes on a whole new dimension showing the kids, and their ongoing plan to rob a bank. ANd like with the script, there are the little “break” sections where the kids are roleplaying. Tyler clearly had fun drawing out the figurines and action figures that are part of the role-play adventures. His work as colorist for the trade is also superb. Like his artwork, a lot of dedication and detail went into choosing the colors that make this visual drama of chaos come to life.

Thomas Mauer was sterling and fantastic as letterer for this series and its trade. Every member of the group has a voice: Paige, Berger, Stretch and Walter, too. Not to mention Paige’s father, the criminals, even minor figures like the bank manager. Thomas provides a voice to every character in the book. It’s like with the casting of a big budget film, every member of the story needs a voice. Thomas helps provide that voice with his lettering, giving added life to the script and artwork.

PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:

What would happen if four kids decided to rob a bank? The answer is rather surprising and somewhat funny. That’s exactly what readers will get with this, the collected edition of the wonderful series. There’s a lot of laughs, lots of drama and top notch development. Most of all, it’s the kind of trade that once read, will be picked up again and again and again. So don’t delay, go out and get a copy and enjoy it today.

PopCultHQ’s Rating:

5 Out of 5 Stars
