A Brief and Spoiler-Free Book Review: “Ready Player One”

I finished reading this book a few weeks ago and I’m still having dreams about it. This is possibly the best book I’ve read this year. It’s one of those books that lingers with you. Now let me warn you (no spoilers here) this book is full of pop culture references from the 80’s. It takes places in 2044 where humans use a virtual reality realm called OASIS to escape their grim reality.  The protagonist, Wade, is engaged in a virtual scavenger hunt that could potentially make him a billionaire. But only those with supreme knowledge in popular culture make it through the stages.

I loved this book so much, I donated my copy to my library. I want others to read it. I want others to share the experience. This one is highly recommended. I eagerly await for the movie adaptation that is to be directed by Steven Spielberg.

If you love 80’s popular culture, you’ll love this book. If you are even remotely familiar with gaming culture, you’ll enjoy this book.  I wonder if this book’s popularity has to do with the fact that us 80’s kids are now middle-aged and are the main demographic for this type of book? Are other generations falling for this story? Let me know what you thought of this book in the comments.

Final rating: 10 out of 10 crystal keys
