PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
The Last Days of American Crime Vol. 1 TPB
Rick Remender’s script is one that is pure dynamite. It’s full of everything that such a title would suggest. Danger, excitement, compelling characters, and a plot that is worthy of a movie. For every fan of crime and heist movies, this graphic novel is a must read. And if they enjoy Vol. 1 that much, they will certainly enjoy Vol. 2 and more of Rick’s writing when it comes out.
Art:
Greg Tocchini’s art is a vivid and violent work of wonder. There’s intense color on every page, with violence and gun play that keeps the story peppered and alive. Greg uses lots of red, whether it’s red for the background or a sunset, or red for wounds sustained in the story. Every character has defined shape, even the most minor of background figures. New readers will come for Rick’s story and stay for it along with Greg’s art, because together they produce one fine graphic novel experience.
Rus Wooton’s lettering for the first volume is interesting. Even though the words themselves may look the same, readers will hear them differently inside their minds. There’s a different tonality for each character, every one of them has their own voice like in a big production movie. From the hard and careful thinking male lead, to the most secondary of side figures, everyone stands out, and that’s all thanks to Rus Wooton.
PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:
Crime, heist and action films are always enjoyed by movie fans. For comic readers, if they enjoy those genres of film, then they will enjoy this graphic novel. It has everything, fully fleshed out and interesting characters, a great plot with a huge payoff, action and violence galore. Last Days of American Crime Vol. 1 is well worth taking the time to read, because people will walk away wanting more.
