START AGAIN is a superhero boy meets girl story that is EXPLICITLY (read NSFW) British. The story follows AJAY, the British national superhero, and NATALIE as they have a chance encounter in a nightclub in Leeds city centre. It will explore themes of anxiety, social pressure and interracial relationships based on some of creator Jamie Me’s life experiences. Inspirations for the new project come from modern British comedies such as Peep Show and Catastrophe (technically Brit-American) while taking on the superhero genre by infusing unfamiliar settings, elements and characters.
PopCultHQ’s Comic Book Review:
START AGAIN #1
(Superhero Boy Meets Girl)
I happened to be on Twitter the other day when creator Jamie Me contacted me about reviewing his new title START AGAIN. I was more than happy to give it a look, having reviewed a title of Jamie’s back in June (QUEEN #1 – read the review here).
Start Again is a delightfully enjoyable story. It has a great pace, smooth storyline, and appealing artwork. Jamie Me has delivered a unique twist on superhero life, one that is more authentic, and more adult. It incorporates a lot of the current climate of today: social media, peer pressure, how the media spins the news, paparazzi, the desire to be loved, the price of fame, and how quickly one can fall from obscurity. Jamie is at his best; he has made for an outstanding read, relatable and enjoyable characters, and the right amount of backstory given making the reader curious for what’s upcoming (especially learning more about the superhero known as ‘JUMP’).
Artist Toni Doya has a terrific grasp of the human body, as his illustrations accurately detail the characters’ physiques, their bodies movement, the way their clothes appear, really everything is quite accurate. His overall look is very polished and professional. Adding colorist Sean Callahan was a wise choice. In going over Start Again a couple of times to merely focus on the illustrations, coloring, shading, etc., I was thoroughly impressed with Callahan’s work, as it rivals (if not surpasses) anything currently available by Marvel and DC. Smart choices, vibrant hues, terrific shading and shadows, and a very dynamic look without being all-up-in-your-face.
PopCultHQ’s overall assessment:
Jamie Me once again shows his creativity in creating this unique story. His delivery is at a nice pace, the words are sharp, and there’s no fluff or excessive/unnecessary dialog. Teaming up with Toni Doya and Sean Callahan was brilliant move. With Doya’s attention to detail and Callahan’s incredible additions to the interior art, coupled with Me’s intriguing story, makes Start Again #1 a first-rate British superhero story that looks like it’s going to be an exciting ride!
