I received an advanced reader copy of Wen Spencer’s Storm Furies. This is the latest in The Elfhome Series (aka Tinker series). Storm Furies is published by Baen Books and the hardcover publication will be available August 6.
The Elfhome series blends elements of urban fantasy and science fiction in a world where modern-day Pittsburgh coexists with a parallel world inhabited by elves. This overlap of worlds is the direct result of a malfunctioning transdimensional gate that shifts the Earthen city and the magical realm of Elfhome every month.
The series follows the adventures of Tinker, a genius inventor and mechanic who navigates the complexities of living in a city that is part of both worlds.
The Novels
- Tinker (2003)
- The first book introduces Tinker, who runs her scrapyard / workshop in Pittsburgh. She becomes embroiled in a conflict with elves and other magical beings while trying to stop a nefarious plot that threatens both worlds.
- Wolf Who Rules (2006)
- The sequel follows Tinker as she adjusts to her new role within the elf community and deals with the political intrigue and dangers that come with it. The story delves deeper into the elven culture and the challenges of balancing two different worlds.
- Elfhome (2012)
- The third in the series gives readers a broader perspective on the ongoing conflicts and the intricacies of dwelling in two realities. Tinker continues to innovate and protect her loved ones against mounting threats.
- Wood Sprites (2014)
- This book focus on Tinker’s younger cousins. Twins Louise and Jillian Mayer discover their own connections to Elfhome and add new dimensions to the series’ exploration of family, and the impact of magic on modern life.
- Project Elfhome (2016)
- A collection of short stories set in the Elfhome universe that builds some history and deepens the background of characters.
- Harbinger (2022)
- The saga continues with the war against the oni reaching a critical point. Tinker discovers that the oni have a new weapon. The Harbringers, renowned warlords of the Stone Clan are sent to lead the allied war efforts and Tinker navigates the challenges involving her newfound baby siblings, who happen to be wood sprites

THE GODDESS OF WAR RIDES,
HERALDED BY STORM FURIES
The oni have invaded Pittsburgh on Elfhome. And, so far, it looks like they are winning. All this is according to prophecy. But the prophecy is big on symbols and light on specifics. Tinker and her allies are doing the best they can to defend the city and the civilians caught in the crossfire of a war between elves that’s been brewing for centuries. But the enemy has no hesitation whatsoever in involving innocents. All the pieces in this deadly game are in place—and everyone trusts Tinker will save them. All she needs is a plan. And then the lights go out, and the storm begins to rage. . . .
Book 7 – Storm Furies
Storm Furies (2024) continues the series’ narrative. It’s a fast paced novel that is a direct continuation of Harbringer. In fact, it starts so quickly that you feel like you are still in the same novel.
It’s a fast paced story that drops you straight into the action. If you have not read the previous novels (especially Harbringer) you will be lost. Wen Spencer’s Storm Furies begins were Harbringer left off. PIttsburgh had been invaded and massive spell was unleashed.
Harbringer had so many set ups and so many character perspectives that is was hard to follow. The book seemed disjointed and chaotic. Storm Furies brings everything together. This book reads smoother as it fits all the puzzle pieces together into a cohesive storyline. All the loose ends are tied up and our main characters are left in a good place.
If this is the end of the Tinker storyline, it’s a good place to leave it. If there are more storylines forthcoming or a larger expansion of the worlds, I look forward to reading them.
My one problem with Wen Spencer’s Storm Furies is that it drops you into the middle of a battlefield. If you have not read the previous book or even if it’s been a while since you did read it, you will be in for a shock. This is not a nice easy read that you can sit back and relax. It drops you right in the middle of confusion. Wen Spencer does a great job relaying the confusion and pace of a battle. Before picking up this novel, I suggest you read it’s predecessor, or at least refresh you memory of the events before are overwhelmed.
Rating
Overall I rate this as a 4 star (out of 5). It’s a good, fast paced novel rife with science and magic. It’s intensity pulls you in and holds your attention, while the storyline keeps you on the edge of your seat. If you wanted a nice relaxing read, this is not it. It is involving and keeps you thinking. It is hard to put the book down.
