“Pants Optional” is PopCultHQ’s Zoom video interview feature where we connect with individuals within the comic book community and get the low-down…from the waist up (cuz it’s Zoom and all). It’s a way to see/hear what creators have been doing during the pandemic, projects which may be in motion, and noteworthy events and happenings taking place in lieu of conventions, appearances, and the weekly NCBD grind.
For Episode XXXVIII, I spoke with Madeleine Holly-Rosing. The creator/writer of the wildly popular BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY is bringing that world to audiophiles everywhere! ‘The Ghost Ship‘ is an eight-episode, standalone audio drama series based during the timeline of the original six issue mini-series. Each episode will be approximately 30 minutes long and includes a full cast, special effects, and original music (like those old time radio dramas).
Madeleine Holly-Rosing (Writer/Creator/Producer) A TV, feature film, comic book writer, and novelist, Madeleine holds an MFA in Screenwriting from UCLA where she won numerous awards as well as the Sloan Fellowship. Madeleine has published a number of short stories, novellas, and a novel based on the BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY universe. Other comic projects include the short story, The Scout which is part of The 4th Monkey anthology, The Sanctuary (The Edgar Allan Poe Chronicles anthology), The Marriage Counselor (The Cthulhu is Hard to Spell anthology), The Glob (Night Wolf Vol. 1), Infinity Tree (Menagerie: Declassified) and the upcoming The Airship Pirate (The Rum Row anthology), and The Birth (Stan Yak Vampire Anthology). She was recently hired to write a story for Joe Benitez’s, Lady Mechanika.
Here’s a look at Madeleine’s new project…
BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY: Ghost Ship Audio Drama Series

`
Based on the popular steampunk supernatural graphic novel and prose series, Boston Metaphysical Society, The Ghost Ship follows the cases of an ex-Pinkerton detective, a spirit photographer, and a genius scientist who battle supernatural forces in late 1800s Boston.
So sit back, relax, and chill with us as we discuss developing an audio drama based off her wildly successful franchise the BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY, the voice cast she’s working with, having her book adorning New York Comic Con ‘Artist Alley’ badges this year, and the two books of hers which are being published by Source Point Press this December and are available for pre-order now!
Special thanks to Madeleine Holly-Rosing for taking the time to speak with us at PopCultHQ. Be sure to follow her and the BOSTON METAPHYSICAL SOCIETY (links below) for all the latest! When Erin, Caitlin’s mother, discovers her daughter can control a demon, she is outraged. In her mind, only a Great House has the right to such power, but who will listen to a poor Irish woman? House Lowell will. For Alice Lowell has inherited an old Puritan journal which describes how to find and enslave a demon, but she needs a psychic to do it. Kidnapping Caitlin is the first step in a plan to rid her husband’s House of debt. But with a demon to do their bidding, her ambitions will be limitless.
`
The Book of Demons can be read as a standalone story, but also acts as a continuation of the hit comic “Boston Metaphysical Society: Ghosts and Demons.”

The year is 1895. Imagine an alternate Steampunk history where ghosts and demons are a normal part of life. Families known as “Great Houses” control the economy of the Great States of America and the middle- and lower-class Irish’s sole purpose is not to only serve them, but to rid their lives of supernatural beings. This is the story of an ex-Pinkerton detective, a spirit photographer, and a genius scientist who work together to battle these supernatural forces. They are the Boston Metaphysical Society. Wish them luck. They are going to need it.
