Software companies have been teasing us with augmented reality for quite a while now, and we’ve all been waiting patiently for AR games to come into their own. When Pokémon GO took the world by storm in 2016, it seemed only natural that a slew of awesome AR games would follow. But unfortunately, it went a bit quiet on the AR front. AR games did, of course, hit the market, but none that captured the attention quite like those wacky Pokémons. We expected the online casino industry to jump straight on the bandwagon with AR slots, but no matter how often we search through online casinos that accept Interac we can’t find a worthy AR game – click here to see for yourself. It seems as though the casino game market is going to blow past AR and head straight to VR instead.
Fear not, however, because things are looking up. There are a bunch of AR games that are now definitely worth your time. They offer the chance to experience an other-worldly adventure that takes place half in your living room (or garden, or street, or city centre), and half in your fantasy. Some were released a few years ago but have since been upgraded, and some are brand spanking new. 2021 is shaping up to be an outstanding AR gaming year, and we’re here to shine a light on a few of the best games to try.
Harry Potter: Wizards Unite
If you’re a Potter fan, you’re going to love this game. The wizarding world of Harry Potter opens up to you in all its glory, and you get to take on the role of wizard/witch. The game works in similar fashion to Pokémon GO, using your GPS to feed you content as you go off on your adventure. The aim of the game is to save the wizarding world from impending doom. You’ll use your wand to cast spells and defeat enemies, and you’ll need to collect elements that will help you in your mission. You’ll also meet plenty of famous wizard faces along the way. This game could be the closest you’ll ever come to being part of the magical world of Harry Potter – don’t miss your chance.
Dark: Subject One
If Harry Potter is just a bit too cutesy for your taste, you might prefer Dark: Subject One. This game has elements of horror, suspense, mystery, and adventure. In the game, you’ll take on the role of the protagonist – a person who is trying to figure out what has happened to their friend who mysteriously disappeared. The game opens up a whole new universe to explore, and you’ll need to look for clues along the way. Not only is the game extremely intuitive, it’s also stunning to behold. This truly is AR at its best.
Jurassic World Alive
Ever since the first Jurassic Park movie landed in cinemas in 1993, we’ve been collectively obsessed with dinosaurs. Dinosaur movies, dinosaur pyjamas, dinosaur lunch boxes – you name it, we’ve got it. It’s not surprising then that there would be an AR game featuring giant, terrifying dinos for us to mess with. This game has it all. Not only are massive dinosaurs stomping brazenly around our modern-day landscapes, but get the chance to create our own dinos by collecting DNA. Yep, we get to experience the megalomania of being a Dinosaur God, and then we get to share our creations with our friends. This game encourages group engagement, so round up your other dino-loving mates and get playing. The graphics are excellent, and the gameplay is fast paced and super exciting.
