EDGAR ALLAN POE’S SNIFTER OF TERROR

EDGAR ALLAN POE’S SNIFTER OF TERROR
Season Two issue 5 From AHOY Comics!

This Wednesday, AHOY Comics is set to release the fifth issue of EDGAR ALLAN POE’S SNIFTER OF TERROR – Season Two, including the story “Berenice” written by Alisa Kwitney and illustrated by Mauricet. It’s a fantastic adaptation of a lesser known Poe story that might put you off going to the dentist ever again.

“Let’s face it, there’s something creepy about teeth,” says Kwitney. “After all, they’re the only part of our skeletal system that isn’t discreetly covered by a bit of flesh. Jung believed that dreams of losing one’s teeth were related to life transitions. This may have been connected to the old idea that every time a woman gives birth to a live baby, she loses a tooth. If all this talk of birth and teeth has you feeling a bit uncomfortable, you’re not alone—there are numerous folk tales from various different cultures that center around the uncomfortable idea that women’s dentition is not the same as men’s.”

Kwitney also gave us a taste of the history and research that went into her horrifying and unique adaptation of the Poe tale. “I have no idea why this hymn to hypochondriacal passion isn’t better known, because this is definitely one of Poe’s more unsettling tales,” says Kwitney. “It’s also a story which makes me feel a little squicky as a woman and a feminist. I decided to turn that squick on its head, as it were. I also did my research—all the insane theories about bicycle riding, which are not in the original tale, are based on medical beliefs of the time. I even included cameos by the actual proponents of the theory, and Alain Mauricet drew them in as guests in the opening panels. They are Dr. Arabella Kenealy (a stout, short, curly haired, bespectacled woman) and Dr. Arthur Shadwell (a tall, thin, beak nosed gentleman with a receding hairline). Feel free to do your own research into that dreaded scourge of female health and chastity—the bicycle.”

What people are saying about Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter of Terror:

“Poe’s legacy is only getting weirder these days with Ahoy Comics and its comics magazine series Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter of Terror, an admirably bizarre concoction that is equal parts Tales from the Crypt and Drunk History. The boozy author retells his tales of horror and mystery and things get (you guessed it) pretty weird.”
— DEADLINE HOLLYWOOD

“A zany look at horror through the weird interpretive lens of a drunk
Edgar Allan Poe as your guide through classic tales of the macabre.”
— io9

“Snifter of Terror is the EC Comics-meets-Mad
Magazine book you’ll want to read.”
—  PC MAG

A “tantalizing new collection of frightful stories ….. It’s a refreshing
measure of the macabre from some of the genre’s top talent,
with a unique twist on the source material.”
— SYFYWIRE

“What do you get when you mix Edgar Allan Poe, syphilis, breakfast cereal, and a barnacle? Sounds like a joke with a terrible punchline, but in this case, the result is splendid. Edgar Allan Poe’s Snifter of Terror #1 provides the world with all of that and so much more.”
— FANBASE PRESS

“Exploring hilariously dark tales of suspense, shock and horror,
this is one ghoulishly excellent comic you won’t want to miss!”
— IMPULSE GAMER

“A great, fun read.”
— COMICON

“Fun and creepy in all the right ways.”
— FANDOM POST

“Absolutely hysterical.”
— READING WITH A FLIGHT RING

The independent, Syracuse-based company is the brainchild of Publisher Hart Seely, an award-winning reporter whose humor and satire has appeared in The New York Times and on National Public Radio. AHOY’s Editor-in-Chief Tom Peyer is committed to publishing comics with a (dark) sense of humor with titles like the superhero parody THE WRONG EARTH, the religious satire HIGH HEAVEN, the sci fi spoof CAPTAIN GINGER, the time travel tales PLANET OF THE NERDS and BRONZE AGE BOOGIE, HASHTAG: DANGER and the anthology series EDGAR ALLAN POE’S SNIFTER OF TERROR. This summer, the company will publish the highly anticipated SECOND COMING, the satirical comic book series by Mark Russell and Richard Pace in which Jesus Christ resumes His Holy Mission.
