Norse mythology, as a theme for games, has been popular for quite a while, but you could say that it’s been enjoying a bit of a resurgence of late. More and more games appear to be springing up on the market which take inspiration from Vikings and the like. The Norse mythology influence has been felt across a range of genres and titles, so we’ve done our best to list a few of the better ones below.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim will go down as one of the most popular games of all time, and as it’s available to play on pretty much every console out there, it’s managed to develop a cult following. Norse mythology plays a key role in the game, with many details direct lifts from it. What they’ve really managed to get right with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is the aesthetic side of the game. The level of detail used is amazing, with players who enjoy exploring sure to be in their element.
God of War
God of War managed to take the world by storm when it was released, and in many ways takes a slightly different approach to other titles which are influenced by Norse mythology. What the game manages to do is bring the more complex concepts of the folklore together, presenting them in a way that everyone can understand, and most crucially, enjoy. Yes, God of War may take a detour when it comes to some of the details, but as a game it breathes fresh life into the genre, with more to come.
Changing tact slightly as we have opted to include a slot game in this list, and for good reason. Thunderstruck II, developed by industry heavyweights Microgaming, is by far and away one of the most successful slot games of all time. It was released nearly a decade ago, and still ranks of one of the most regularly played titles, with its 243 ways to win a big pull for players, as operators such as Royal Vegas CA can confirm. Thunderstruck II has a strong Norse mythology theme running through it, with everything from the symbols on the reels to the features evidence of its influence.
Magicka is a game created by Swedish development team Arrowhead Game Studios, and as well as this version of the game being successful, it’s sequel Magicka 2 has been equally as impressive. Again, the Magicka series shines light on a different part of Norse mythology, this time it’s spells and wizardry in the spotlight. It does of course cover the crux of Norse mythology, but it’s refreshing to see the culture’s history of paganism and sorcery brought to life once again.
The great thing about Norse mythology games is that there’s so much to go at in terms of which parts the developers want to shine a light on. This has always led to great games being made, and whether you’re a PC gamer, console player, or even into slot games, you’re sure to find some Norse mythology influence somewhere.
