August 17th, 1908 was the official release date of what is considered to be the first ever animated cartoon. Fantasmagorie is a French film was created by Émile Cohl. Each frame was individually drawn on paper and then shot onto negative film, giving it a blackboard look. Fantasmagorie consisted of 700 drawings and ran for a total of about two minutes.
