On August 8, 2017 the world lost a legend they didn’t even know. Few would have recognized Haruo Nakajima, but they would definitely recognize him in costume.
He was the first actor to don the 200-lb. rubber suit that would become known as Godzilla and he wore it for 12 more films between 1954 and his retirement in 1972.
Mr. Nakajima wasn’t just an actor in a suit, he worked hard to bring Godzilla to life. He spent hours at the zoo studying the gait of large animals such as elephants and bears so that he could bring realism to the movements of his monster. Haruo Nakajima‘s dedication is a large part of what made Godzilla the King of Monsters. He retired from films in 1972.
In 1983, Mr. Haruo Nakajima put on a Godzilla suit for a photo shoot in a magazine called Uchusen. The suit he is wearing was made in 1979 for Godzilla’s 25th anniversary.
Nakajima passed away on August 8th, 2017 at the age of 88.
