Sink your teeth into THE SWEETNESS, a new science fiction adventure comic book series about intergalactic smugglers by acclaimed, YALSA-nominated writer/artist Miss Lasko-Gross (HENNI) and the Eisner Award-nominated, XERIC award-winning cartoonist Kevin Colden (FISHTOWN). Set in the future, the first collaboration from the married creative team of Lasko-Gross and Colden follows two badass female intergalactic smugglers catering to the unique tastes of Alien drug addicts with a mysterious controlled substance. Due out in June from Z2 Comics, THE SWEETNESS reads like an old-school Vertigo book packed with fun-loving adventure.
In THE SWEETNESS, Miss and Kevin have crafted characters and storylines that are effortlessly feminist in ways other popular comics play lip service to but don’t quite land.“I want people to be excited about a badass space smuggler story and fall in love with the characters,” says Miss Lasko-Gross. “I hope readers are sucked into the story by the surreal moments of twisted humor and surprise.”
“THE SWEETNESS is smart, fun, and Star-Warsy, but with more women, people of color — and it’s more raunchy,” says Kevin Colden. “This series marks my return to drawing long form comics (after taking time off to focus on family and other creative work), and while I’m usually very critical of my own work, this is the best work I’ve done.”
Miss Lasko-Gross is the author and illustrator of the YALSA nominated Henni from Z2 Comics, Fantagraphics Books: A Mess Of Everything (named one of Booklist’s top 10 graphic novels of the year) and the YALSA nominated Escape From “Special.” Her artwork is currently featured in the traveling exhibit Graphic Details: Confessional Comics By Jewish Women.

Check out what people are saying about “THE SWEETNESS”:
“I really enjoyed [THE SWEETNESS]! Lasko-Gross and Colden have created a snapping, crackling sci-fi adventure – the dialogue’s worthy of comparisons to Firefly and Hitchhiker’s Guide, and the art is crisp, clean, and when it needs to be, odd in just the nicest way.”
— Charles Soule, Daredevil, Star Wars: Poe Dameron
“A twisted and often disturbing tale of a intergalactic drug smuggling, centered on two tough and unconventional women who are trying to make a living pushing their mysterious product to alien customers.”
“The Sweetness was great! This isn’t a space opera — this is a space punk rock show with brains, attitude and sex appeal to burn.”
— Fred Van Lente, ARCHER & ARMSTRONG
“THE SWEETNESS blends the strangeness of outer space with weird aesthetics similar to Hickman’s MANHATTAN PROJECTS and EAST OF WEST. Lasko- Gross and Colden are in top form with weird characters and a great premise. It’s beautiful work, I look forward to seeing where the story goes.”
—Jamal Igle,creator of MOLLY DANGER
“Lasko-Gross’ words and Colden’s art make the characters feel as they’ve always been around, with the scars and stories and mended bones to prove it.”
“As a Type 1 Diabetic, I know all too well the sweet allure and danger of sugar. As a comics fan, The Sweetness, by Miss Lasko-Gross and Kevin Colden, is even more seductive and its delights are sure to be bad for anyone in the best possible way!”
— Joe Infurnari, Artist The Bunker
“THE SWEETNESS is filled with sugar, spice, and everything nasty. Lasko-Gross and Colden evoke the work of Moebius, Grant Morrison, and Frank Quitely in this insane outer space epic.”
— David Gallaher, THE ONLY LIVING BOY, HIGH MOON
“The Sweetness is so sweet that I just injected it into my eye balls and you know what I saw? Office Space in space. Get ready to pee your moon boots.”
