The classic Alan Moore and Brian Bolland Elseworld (alternate universe) tale “The Killing Joke” has been announced at SDCC by Bruce Timm (Batman Animated Series) as one of their next projects coming out in 2016s. During the DC Comics panel at San Diego Comic Con for “God and Monsters” the current animated feature released by DC Animated studios the news was dropped by Timm to a very pleased crowd. No further details were given if the new animated feature will include any of the controversial material that has been long fought over by woman’s rights groups against the books very dark content and depiction of violence towards woman. The graphic story of the shooting, bondage and torture to Barbara Gordan (Batgirl the daughter of Commissioner Gordon in front of his very own eyes can be too much for the squeamish.
Very few Elseworld tales have crossed-over to the mainstream story of the DC comics universe but Barbara Gordan’s shooting at the hands of the Joker and paralyzation have. This in turn led her to becoming another superhero ally to the Bat-family, the computer savvy expert known as The Oracle.
Another twist to The Killing Joke story is the laugh that Joker and Batman share at the end of the comic book. All this will be watched closely by everyone, as it is sure to cause an uproar is some group out there in the activist world. If the special variant cover that honored The Killing Joke was pulled from print, this announcement will be sure to cause ruffled feathers. This geek personally can not wait for a full exact conversion of the comic to an animated film if that is the route DC chooses to go.
