There were only 9 issues of the Battle Chasers comic book, but it developed a fan base and it seems that those fans are being rewarded with its return as both a comic and a game.
Joe Madureira created Battle Chasers in April 1998 and it quickly became known for it’s distinctive art style and it’s notoriously slow release schedule. There was an average of six months between comic releases and the final issue (#10) was never released, leaving a lot of fans with a cliffhanger.
Fourteen years after the final release it is being pulled out of retirement. Madureira and Vigil co-founder Ryan Stefanelli have teamed up to form Airship Syndicate. They won’t release too much information on the game yet, but they will tell us it is a role-playing game where you get to control the classic Battle Chasers characters such as Garrison, Gully and Calibretto in a style similar to the Darksiders games.
Stefanelli tells us, “Even though the game mechanically is going to be very different from Darksiders, I think we’re still really going to be doing everything we can to make sure that the dungeon exploration side of the game is soaked with lots of fun adventurous elements.”
So far they don’t have a publisher for the comic or a release date, but they are looking at a three-issue arcs and hopefully the first will conclude the original series while tying into the game.
As for the game, it apparently is not a done deal as they are looking for funding. When asked about their options, Stefanelli replied “We’re going to sort of let fate decide for us exactly how we should best pay for the game.”
